Nearly 4 years later..

February 22, 2017 by Coach B

The "Active Teams" page under "Goodies" has been updated after receiving data from Chairman. Interesting.

A few not-so-fun-facts:

- Number of countries represented in ML has decreased by 14% (26 fewer countries represented)

- The only countries where more than 1000 people have active manager accounts are Norway (1088) and Romania (1478).

On the bright side

- Out of the 10,470-or-so amount of active managers still in this game, 0.29% (30 ish people) are active in the forums :´)

Inquiries about site content etc. can be sent to me in-game here

New team Q record!

September 23, 2013 by Coach B

As much attention as this should have gotten, 32 rounds later - MLM wants to congratulate a manager who signed the history book last season.

At the end of Season 104, manager - Cyrus - of the 2 time Champions League winning team BLACK PEARL peaked his amazing team to a top team quality of 98,64(!), a number that definetely puts BLACK PEARL at the top of the team Q records table.

Cyrus has impressed us all with his amazing build, and we wish him the best of luck in the future!

Attention! New domain

September 23, 2013 by Coach B

Some of you have probably noticed that the site has been down for a few days now. To keep it short, we basically will have to downgrade the page because of the expenses that came with running this page. It came to a point where I realized I shouldn't have to spend money on this site because it is running rather inactive at the moment and I don't have time to do it all by myself. Please read the article two posts down ("ML Magazine future", September 15) for more information.

From now on, ML Magazine will NOT be available on our .net domain,

but it will be on our new (free) domain:

The site has been incredibly inactive lately and I am sorry if any of you feel let down. I enjoy running this site but I am not any more willing to pay my own money for the domain and membership of the host.

If anyone may be interested in writing articles in the magazine feel free to send them to me (Galaxias FC) in-game and I will evaluate and post.

The site will from now on be run on a free host, but will keep its awesome domain name ml-magazine.net for another year, so I hope my spark for the game comes back some time soon.

Secrets to Success: Klaebs Kings 2/2

August 17, 2013 by Coach B

You have a pretty shiny trophy cabinet with 6 League Cup titles, a Super Cup Trophy and 10(!) league titles, the last 7 of them being consecutive. What do you think about that?

I’m actually pretty proud of the achievement because it may not seem like it, but some of those wins have been done from a really bad starts to the season. I also see that it has given the other managers something to strive for and to try new ideas in building a team to beat me.

You have maintained a very stable squad and kept your team on the top for a long time, what have you learned through this whole time of training players? How have your training methods changed through the last 20 seasons?

I like to either develop my own players or buy players at about 20-22yo and good Q. I play all my 17-27 yo in all friendlies and I look for certain things that I like in a player including where they play best, high scoring ability, scoring goals from free kicks etc. Q is not everything but it certainly can be an indicator. I like to have the base of the next generation of Kings in the team early and top up when there is a gap. I also like to have a squad big enough to play in 2 comps at once that is, League, MLCL or League Cup. The one thing I have changed is not playing my whole team down in fitness in friendlies, now if a developing player gets to their low fit point I stop playing friendlies.

What are your goals for the future?

My main goal is to get past the Quarter Finals in the MLCL and win it one day. To do that I have to win my league first so it is important for me to stay strong in the League. I’m working on my tactics more and my main formation has changed in the last few season. This area is the one to focus on. A side goal is to get to Q97. We got to Q96.91 the last 2 seasons, but this is not the major goal and I believe the MLCL can be still won by a slightly lower Q team given the right tactics as occurred a few seasons ago with Dota Allstars

Final question: what is your Secret to Success?

I have received a lot of help from Managers such as Chalaat, Wriggle and Roscop which helped me heaps. A few seasons ago Wriggle gave me a challenge to get my team to a higher Q and I took the gamble and sold some of my best players and bought some good younger players. Not quite a rebuild but a restructure. This became the basis of the current run of success. The other thing is to be open to other ideas and to talk to other managers about what they do.

Thank you for coming in, Klaebs! We are excited to see more of you and the Kings in the future.

Secrets to Success: Klaebs Kings 1/2

August 16, 2013 by Coach B

Today we are sitting down with Klaebs, an experienced manager and forum MOD, to talk about his time here in ManagerLeague. His team, Klaebs Kings has been in the Australian league system since season 71.

Welcome. Tell us about yourself, who are you outside of ManagerLeague?

I work for myself (hence why I’m on ML so much) as a Consultant for Companies helping with their Strategic Planning, Policy and Structure and training staff. Mostly from home with travel to various parts of OZ.

Got 4 Kids and 2 Grand Kids, so yes I’m one of the Older Managers...

How did you pick out your team name and username?

Klaebs is an abbreviation of my last name and what I’m called by some, I won’t mention other things I’m called. The Kings comes as it sounds and looks good with Klaebs.

You are also a forum MOD, how did that go down and what do you do as a MOD?

I know a number of people were surprised, none more than me. It actually happened by accident. The Aussie Div 1 managers were talking about the need to improve the Oz League. One part of this was to increase the number of Aussie managers. One evening while in the Chat Room with Chalaat and Slycujo I asked Spinner, who was also on, what he could do to help us with the recruitment. After a few things were discussed Spinner saw that to do what we were wanting I needed to have Mod access and as Chalaat is actually the Greek Forum Mod I got the job. I will be doing a second phase of the recruitment in the next few weeks.

What is your favourite thing about the game?

I love the way you get the highs and lows of managing a team. I see all the whiney threads as what being a manager really is like. Players/teams not performing as expected, trying new tactics, the anticipation of the next game. And as some will know my anticipation for my next Training PM . I also love helping other managers with their struggles and desire to build a better team.

What is your least favourite thing about the game?

Never having played a Department Cup, haha. I think the balance between training gains and friendly gains could be adjusted to make training more rewarding and help the manager manage just a little more. I know there are a number of ideas out there including Rational’s idea (there’s a whole thread or two on this somewhere). Spinner is pretty busy with backroom stuff and the new game they are developing so I don’t think this will happen soon, but one day maybe.

Stick around for the second and last part of the interview, which will be posted tomorrow.

MLCL Final Match Teaser - Statements from the finalist managers

July 23, 2013 by Adrian Mutu

We've reached the final of the Champions League competition. This season puts Unique - champion from last season's CL - against Rekruttene, Super Cup winner and a dominant force in Norway for the past seasons.

Fenriken, manager of the Norwegian club, comments: "The MLCL trophy is the only one that I'm missing. So it's fun to have a chance to win it, in my final active season. Unique has the best team in the game, so he is a big favorite. But it's not always the favorite that wins in ML. That is my hope."

King Leo is very eager to satisfy his thirst for trophies: "'I'm very pleased to have reached consecutive finals, I now have the chance to become the 5th team to win back to back titles and the 1st team since tm punishment in S74/5. Rekruttene has a fantastic team! He has been the best team in the best league for the past 5 seasons, even though he is struggling this season, so it will be a very tough game. I'm hoping it doesn't go to penalties as his pen stat is far better than mine. I don't know much about him, but I'd like to wish him good luck and I hope that the game isn't ruined by a red card or dodgy ref and may the best team win!"

The final brings you the best of the best, and tickets are sold out for the toughest match of the season. Like every season, the match will be played in Round 27, at 12:00.

Secrets to Success: King Leonidas 2/2

July 19, 2013 by Coach B

We are back with the second and last part of this great interview with King Leonidas of Unique FC. Here we go!

What led up to you winning the Champions League? Was this a long-term goal for you?

Yesm it was the main goal of mine like most teams I would presume. What led me to winning the CL was luck, a lot of planning and a lot of help in learning how to compete tactically with the best teams.

You are in the Champions League again this season and if you advance, you will most likely go up against other strong teams like Blest and BLACK PEARL, do you think you can manage to win the CL again?

I believe my team is still good enough to compete with the best teams on the game, I would like to think I could win another title but only time will tell.

At the moment your team is the 6th most valuable team in the game, what do you think about that?

Really? I'm surprised I'm still so high considering how old my team are now, I did spend a few seasons as the most valuable team and I managed to get my team to be worth 4.665.304.159 in S99 which I believe is the record. That was a nice achievement.

What have you learned from your current build?

That there is still room for improvement. (winkyface)

What other managers are you watching closely?

There are a few teams in the English Div1 I'm keeping an eye out for who will be winning titles soon such as King-Eric, Beachlife and Dunc. A few others to watch out for are teams like The The Supernaturals, Cleakheaton Wildcats, Hull City EPL and

Fleshers Haugh. All have done very well with training players and once they build I'm sure they will have top teams. Look out for Vagabonds FC! Once his build is done I fancy him to win a CL title.

Do you have any rivals?

Not really...

What are your goals for the future?

To win another CL title and to maybe break my own record of Q98.36

Final question, short and easy: what is your Secret to Success?

Being able to plan a long way ahead and being able to stick to it. Picking up and learning tips then using them to help me.

Thank you so much to King Leonidas, another fantastic interview in our “Secrets to Success” sequel. I think we can all learn something from this guy. Stick around to find out which manager is next to jump into the fire.

Secrets to Success: King Leonidas 1/2

July 18, 2013 by Coach B

In this part of “Secrets to Success” we talked to a manager who has experience from this game since Season 64, he has played in the English Division 1 for five seasons and has already won the league title three times, as well as a very fresh Champions League trophy. Welcome, King Leonidas of Unique FC.

Tell us about yourself, what kind of guy are you outside of ManagerLeague?

Outside of ML I'm just an average guy family work friends the usual stuff. I'm into my sport although mostly as a spectator although I do attempt to play football and pool/snooker.

How did you find out about ManagerLeague?

Google.

What is your favorite thing about the game?

Searching and buying the perfect youths and training them up into monster youths!

And what is your least favorite thing about the game?

The lack of stats such as top goal scorer, most appearances etc, I know we have that in the Hall of Fame but it's only for retired players, I would like to see a live table of a top 5 in each section so you can see your players climb your own lists.

How did you pick out your team name and username?

Team name is just because I like to be a little bit unique and manager name comes from one of my favourite films, 300.

A lot of your players are named after some very interesting female celebrities. How come?

I've named my players differently for a while now, after the Transformers, after the film Watchmen and a couple of other themes. This time I chose hot women, not sure why, I guess I was just bored and it gave me something to do, maybe there pics help soften the blow for teams who lose to me.

You started playing this game in season 64, correct? If you were to pick one major lesson you have learned through all those seasons, what would that be?

Yep. There are so many but the one I'll pick would be not to underestimate the importance weekend cups when looking to build your team.

You spent quite a few seasons in division 2 and 3 in one of the most challanging leagues in the game, England, and when you first made it to the top league you have never gone back. What made you find a comfortable spot in division 1 so quickly?

I spent so many seasons down in the lower divisions stockpiling cash and credits and enjoying training players. I don't buy many credits so it was essential for me if I was to compete with the big spenders of the game. I think I was lucky to have timed my build just right and my build worked out pretty well due to learning off of so many great managers.

That’s all for now! Come back soon for the second part of the interview, where we’ll talk more about Unique FC in the Champions League, Leo’s current build, and other managers.

Secrets to Success: The Dark Defender 3/3

July 14, 2013 by Shaddow Lawson

Top team interview 3 of 3: The Dark Defender

Welcome to the third and final part of the big interview. In this part DD will answer questions regarding his expectations and rival teams. So let's wrap this interview up.

Q: What managers do you watch closely? Do you think anyone is better than you? tactically? etc?
I have a few teams I monitor closely, like Black Pearl, Blest and Unique. It is difficult to compare managers with one another, but I believe Blest must be one of the best in the game. 5 MLCL finals in 6 seasons, that's awesome. And being able to have a top team for over 15 seasons straight: really impressive.

Q: Who is your biggest rival?
Black Pearl

Q: Do you think a lot more teams will reach Q98 and it will become more common?
Yes. I think soon we will have around 10 teams with +Q97,5. Winning MLCL will become only more difficult with time.

Q:Now you have won the big prize in this game, what motivates you still?
Trying to win it a third time, as no one else has achieved this yet.

Q: Do you feel it is a help or a hindrance playing in such a weak league?
The benefit is of course that morale is always at least 85 or even 88-89 when playing the knock-out stages of the MLCL. On the other hand, most teams that get into the knock-out stages perform very well in their own league to, even if it is a tough one, like England and thus also have good morale.
The big disadvantage about playing in a weak league is that I cannot test out that much different tactics to see what works or what works not. Personally I would prefer playing in a tougher league and that's why I have tried to help out teams in the Belgian Division by giving some tips on how to develop players. 2 of them seem to have taken my advice.

Thank you Dark Defender for answering all these questions. Good luck in future seasons. Let's see if you can win the Champions league for a third time. Also I would like to again thank all that submitted their questions, they were all great.

Grand Opening Cup Winners

July 14, 2013

The weekend tournaments we hosted this weekend were all a great success. We struggled a bit with spreading the word about the cup in the beginning, but with some help from the game administrators we were able to send out a public announcement to all the users of the game, which tripled our earlier site visitor record, so welcome to all the new readers, I hope you stick around.

We also want to thank everyone who participated in the cups! The prizes have been handed out by the magazine as promised, and the winners go as the following:

Soon we will put up a page dedicated to the MLM Cups, as we are planning to arrange more of those in the future.

See you around!

Secrets to Success: The Dark Defender 2/3

July 9, by Shaddow Lawson

Top team interview 2 of 3: The Dark Defender

Here we will continue with the big interview with The Dark Defender. In this part he will be answering your questions regarding his 'team build' and we will also ask how he prepares his team for each opposition. Without further ado, let's get started.

Q: What have you learnt from your current build?
I had hoped to learn what is the difference between 2 star players and 5 star players. It is one of those things I just don't understand in the game. Even my 3,5 star mid Houben was able to reach Q98, and performed very well to!

Q: Do you feel you made any mistakes with your build?
I think it would have been better if I trained up more midfielders from the beginning. They seem to be the hardest to train, and it took me a lot of energy to train up the ones that I bought from other managers. In fact, after a few seasons into my build I really thought of giving up and selling the whole lot and try again. But I was already so far into this build, that I continued to train them up. I was frustrated because I knew that because of the mistakes I made, I wasn't able to reach Q99.

Q: Do you think there is room for improvement in your next build?
Absolutely! Me and Black Pearl had the record of Q98.18, and then Unique had Q98.36 in s101. So my next goal is to build a Q99 team. It will be difficult but I think it is possible.

Q: Do you think it's possible to get a team nearly as good as yours without doing "one build" but rather having players who are all different in age?
Very good question! It is one of the reasons why many managers don't like what I did; that is that I peaked the Q of my team to a high and then will have to do a rebuild. But if you don't peak, you will get a Q of around Q96-97 and I do not believe that in the current tough competition of the MLCL you have a good chance of winning the comp. But those that do win it with a continuous team (like Blest) have made an achievement even better than mine!

Q: Name the first 3 key things you look for in your opposition when setting your tactics?
1: What is the formation he plays? And what formation did he play in other big matches? So I try to guess what is the formation he will use against me, and then I pick the formation that best counters that one.
2: Style of play: Continental, long ball or mixed? And adjust mine accordingly.
3: Are his players fit or not? If one is not fit (98 or lower), then he might not be able to play a certain formation and then I can more accurately guess his formation.

Ok, that’s all for this part of the interview. Come back soon for the third and final part of the interview as we will reveal who is Dark Defender’s biggest rival in the game and who he expects to do well the seasons to come.

Secrets to Success: The Dark Defender 1/3

July 5, 2013 by Shaddow Lawson

Over the next few weeks we will be doing interviews with different successful profiles of the game here on MLM. Welcome to the first interview of our first sequel we have decided to call: Secrets to Success!

The Dark Defender has become the dominant force in the Belgian league and has also won the Champions League twice. Welcome to part 1 of 3 of the interview. Before we get started, I would like to thank all the managers that put their questions forward. So let’s do this.

Q: How old are you?
32.

Q: What do you do in real life?
I work at Brussels airport, as an air traffic controller. So, to answer someone else's question: I didn't choose the Belgian League, I am Belgian and I do live here too!

Q: Why did you start playing this game?
Out of sheer boredom!

Q: What is the reason for your team name, emblem etc?
I liked the TV show, so I went for that theme. My current team consists of players of KFC Diest, a team that played in the Belgian top league for a few years in the mid 70's. The reason why I renamed my players to that team, is because my father used to be playing for them, as a striker. That's why I trained up that 1 striker for all atts at 98, I wanted him to be the best in ML. At least stats wise.

Q: Do you enjoy being in the spotlight?
Actually I do. For the first time in my life I am doing something in which I am good at. That always feels nice.

Q: Are you getting paid to do the interview?
I wish!

I think we will end part one on that slightly awkward note. Please stay with us for the next part of the interview where we find out the methods of DD's success and how he plans to improve his next build.

Message from Spinner

July 4, 2013 by Spinner

"When I heard MLM wanted me to say a couple of words for their opening, I was honored and glad to accept. Then again, I'm not much of a speaker! Regardless, I wish to say that I think it's great that the community of ManagerLeague can come together to create other things that live alongside the game. The game is getting close to it's 9 year anniversary, and I hope MLM will manage to do the same one day!

Good luck, Coach B! I will be there playing in the opening cups, that's for sure!
